   A Somerset and Devon name for an imaginary *bogey, used for threatening children into good behaviour: 'Now, Polly, yu've abin a bad, naughty maid, and ef yu be sich a wicked cheel again, I'll zend vor tanker-abogus tu come and car' yu away tu 'is pittee-awl [pit-hole]' (Wright, 1913: 198).
